Tanzania Travel Safety Tips

1. Bring cover ups.
Temperatures in Tanzania and islands of Zanzibar and Pemba can be steamy, but using cover-ups, long sleeve shirts, and long skirts for women will show your respect for local customs. This is especially true when visiting Zanzibar, which is more conservative than other areas.
2. Know your insurance coverage.
Should you find yourself in a medical emergency, you will likely have to evacuate to Kenya or South Africa given the poor medical services throughout Tanzania. Understanding what your medical insurance will or won’t cover during your trip will save you money and give you peace of mind.
3. Carry a copy of your passport.
Tanzanian authorities have been known to check visitors documents at random times. It is best to carry a copy of your passport, but keep your official documents safe at the hotel.
4. Avoid political protests and rallies.
While Tanzania is known for its stability, there have been exceptions to this in the recent past, and the potential for violent protests remains. Be sure to avoid gathering crowds, and dress appropriately to avoid standing out.
5. Keep your distance from wild animals.
Game parks offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see exotic wildlife up-close and personal. But do not let a false sense of security fool you. These animals are wild and should be treated as such. Keep a safe distance and remain in your vehicle when in the game parks.
